What I've Been Up To

All Power, No Speed.

After a few days off (for drinking and barbecuing), I returned once again to High Wycombe Amateur Boxing Club for yet another gruelling session.  Beforehand, however, I managed to catch a word with John, who said he should be fully healed by next week, so we can start our intense training.  I’m simultaneously excited and a little terrified…

Tonight’s training involved a fair amount of skipping and running on the spot, as usual, as well as the normal sickening amount of endurance and speed work.  In addition, however, we also worked quite a bit on defence technique; ducking, dodging and blocking, as well as the ancient art of being punched repeatedly in the stomach.  It may sound odd to say, but there was something gratifying about actually being knocked around a bit!  It’s all well and good throwing hundreds of punches and running around in circles, but it doesn’t really feel like boxing until you take a few good punches…

…is that odd?  Never mind.  Having just about got to grips with the power element of the sport, I’m now working as hard as I can to improve my stamina and speed, as both are somewhat lacking.  I’m hoping that developing my technique should go a long way towards building speed, whilst regular training should handle the stamina element…but what the hell do know?

In short: more pain, more gain; more gain, more glory; more glory, more money for Action for Children. (Or so goes the song, anyway).
