Recovery Weekend
Having just about recovered from my general illness and lack of health, I decided to spend most my Friday night at the gym…as you do.
I didn’t do anything too tough:
Bench presses at 90kg
Chin ups
Incline bench presses at 70kg
Boxing
Isometric training with weighted poles
Complete abs-destroyer workout
I started feeling a little worse for wear over the rest of the weekend, however, so decided to take it a little easier today. Instead of doing anything too taxing, I therefore went swimming for around 20 mins.
I have a bad history with swimming. When I was young (around 9 or 10) I pulled a muscle in my groin quite badly swimming breaststroke with my school. Looking back, I blame the fact we were swimming in a gala in a freezing outside pool, where the warm-up consisted of swimming about for a bit, then standing and shivering, awaiting our relays and individual events.
Since then, I’ve always found the same muscle tweaks when I swim or, strangely, when I perform leg-raises. This may also be due to the fact I re-injured the same muscle group many years later in a wrestling match.
In any case, I am generally wary of swimming and tend to take it easy. On Sunday, therefore, I only swam for around 20 mins. Being me, however, I ended up doing explosive speed training instead of paddling around as I intended I performed one of two lengths as fast as possible, then rested for a couple of minutes and repeated.
Luckily (possibly because I spent a while warming up) I managed not to pull or tweak anything. Counting this as a success, I then spent the equivalent time in the steam room. Victory!
Tomorrow, I shall run. Maybe 10km…maybe 15km…we shall see…
